"There's not much doubt in any of our minds that no complete idea springs fully formed from our brow,
needing only a handshake and a signature on the contract to send it off into the world to make twenty-five billion dollars.
The germ of the idea grows slowly..." - Walt Kelly

The svelte non-pareil

Day Twenty: Write using at least five of the words on the list provided (it's in the link). I used a few more than five, I think.

A ghost of the past absconds to Paris,
the lure of cheese and bread too much to bear,

his brain a generator, buzzing proud
to load artillery, a rising curl.

He would squander a lifetime of worries,
time spent far upwind from his deepest dreams,

the strands of his future made willowy,
draped thin as his cut and salted ego,

but at the farthest end of owl's sight,
he would find no corporeal homestead.

  1. I really like the food imagery and *especially* "draped thin as his cut and salted ego." There's a nice tension between terrible things happening on a psychological level manifested as something pleasing on a sensory level--a wounded ego as preserved meat? The second strophe feels kind of weird in comparison with the rest of it, like machines in an organic world.

I've been enjoying your work this month.

  2. Wow - to be honest I didn't even catch that while I was writing it. Very good point. I'll see if I can come up with something else to either add to or just continue that theme.

As always, thanks for your input!
